This is the first stage of a fascinating journey through the protagonists of Bergamo sculpture in the twentieth century, promoted and supported by the Credito Bergamasco Foundation. The volume collects the intense and unpublished research of the art historian Marcella Cattaneo, who recognizes to the city of Bergamo a precise stylistic and cultural dynamism, attentive to the Milanese and national novelties, but, at the same time, autonomous and aware of its physiognomy. Many are the protagonists of this path, including Nino Galizzi, Gianni Remuzzi, Giacomo Crippa, Giuseppe Siccardi and Giacomo Manzù, accompanied by an iconographic apparatus created by the photographer Francesca Ferrandi.
The study, as the author states: «aims to be the first comprehensive survey of sculpture in Bergamo between 1900 and 1945, with the awareness of making a small but essential contribution to the history of our city and a new instrument in the history of Italian sculpture».
This intent also guided the photographic campaign to offer a new vision of a repertoire that often feeds on archival images, to create a gallery of black and white plates that reveal different artistic personalities and linguistic choices, from which the very nature of sculpture originates in its need for space and light.
