L’istinto e la traccia is a photographic project by Giovanni Diffidenti devoted to contemporary Bergamo and its surrounding area, and to the tensions that run through its landscape, society and everyday life. The volume brings together 101 visual diptychs built on the juxtaposition of images created in different contexts: on one side, views, presences and situations capable of exerting a strong visual appeal; on the other, signs of social, environmental and urban fragility. The contrast does not seek synthesis, but opens up a space for interpretation in which beauty, vulnerability, irony, memory and transformation coexist.

Developed over more than ten years of observing the territory, the book explores an approach that combines artistic research, photojournalism and urban anthropology. Diffidenti’s gaze, shaped by decades of international reportage, returns to his home region with the same attention he has long devoted to margins, conflicts and the consequences of change. The diptych thus becomes both a narrative and critical device: it creates relationships between images, generates visual short circuits, suggests analogies and oppositions, and invites the viewer to dwell on what often remains at the edge of perception.

This is neither a collection of scenic views nor a linear narrative, but rather a visual atlas of the present: an investigation into ways of inhabiting places, the traces left by human presence, and the contradictions that coexist within the same landscape. The volume also includes a critical essay by Professor Claudio Musso, which frames the project within the dialogue between documentary photography and contemporary artistic research.
